Lisa Clair is a playwright and performer based in Brooklyn, NY. She creates original performance based work with her company Lisa Clair Group, a collective of performers, musicians and designers who collaborate across disciplines to create live, experimental performance led by Lisa Clair. Their work blends Clair’s original text, physicality, music, media, psychedelic props, costumes and unstageable stage directions in order to explore the deeply personal, the extremely silly and the mundanely mythological. Previous work has been presented at Dixon Place, Jack, The Bushwick Starr, The Performance Project at University Settlement, The SFX Festival, Cloud City, Ars Nova and The Silent Barn. Lisa holds an MFA in playwriting from Brooklyn College under Mac Wellman and Erin Courtney.
In December of 2018, Lisa Clair Group, in association with Immediate Medium and Target Margin Theater, will present The Making of King Kong a new play by Lisa Clair that reimagines the classic 1933 monster film for the Information Age. Directed by Eugene Ma, this Kong is a bizarre, subversive, and absurdly hilarious dissection of America’s white patriarchal history as told through the stories of Merian C. Cooper, Ernest B. Schoedsack, and that Big F%*cking Monkey. The Making of King Kong will premiere December 2018 at Target Margin’s The Doxsee, Brooklyn’s newest performance venue.
The Making of King Kong was conceived by Lisa Clair under the mentorship of Mac Wellman in Brooklyn College’s MFA playwriting program, and further developed at the Bushwick Starr reading series in 2017. In March 2018, sections of the piece were presented in installation at the Spring/Break Art Show, an annual contemporary art show held concurrent to the Armory Show.
